It has occurred to me that we could use the equivalent of a "vibes
watcher" for each listserv. Such a person would read all messages and
send a personal response to individuals when it appeared necessary.
It would say something like:
Your recent posting may not be in conformance with the guidelines for
proper use of our listserv for the following reason(s):
___ Content was not relevant to the scope and purpose of the listserv
___ Would have been more appropriate for a different listserv
___ Language or tone that is confrontational, abrasive, or disrespectful.
___ Needless repetition or unproductive prolongation of discussion
___ Possibly better sent to one or more individuals rather than the whole list
___ other
Perhaps our website wizards could create a form that allowed
individuals to provide such feedback anonymously.
I imagine that most people would try to improve their use of the
listserv if their postings resulted in several such comments from
others. In most cases, it is not deliberate malice - its just that
people don't realize how others are reacting to their postings.
