I came across this site for work:

   http://www.cooper.com/

and liked the simplicity of its design.  It is similar to www.mfa.org
which I also like, though less image intensive.

I tend to get tired of sites that scroll off forever and look
disjointed.  This site seems like an antidote to that though it is a
bit corporate.

Still I do like the menu down the side with the contact info at the
bottom with the following to the right:

images
simple description of what they do
three highlighted items

My suggestion for the three items would be:

who we are - meet our activists
what we have done - past events/accomplishments
where we are doing now - info on current campaigns/events/actions

i would suggest that a page like this be our page for new folks and we
have a special members page that is more blog like.
