2008 Presidential Election
Thursday July 12, @08:22PM, by Mike Heichman, Suffolk County
Subject : 2008 Presidential Election
from the CDLC dept.
Summary :
THE GRP SHOULD DECIDE AT OUR JULY 29 STATECOMM. MEETING WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE GOING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

I haven’ heard any arguments from anyone saying that we shouldn’t participate in this campaign. After all, don’t we have ballot status? (Yes, we do.) Isn’t it true that it is relatively easy for us to get Green candidates on the March 4 presidential primary? (Yes, this is also true.) So, what’s the problem?

The problem is that for most of 2008 the CDLC, as well as many other parts of the party have gone to sleep. At earlier meetings during the year, only a small number participated. Since the last State Comm. meeting, I have called for only one meeting (I sent out the announcement to both the CDLC and to the State Comm.) and the only people to respond were John Andrews and Grace Ross and the 3 of us have other major responsibilities in the party, so I never called the meeting.

I propose that we do the following:

1. Decide whether or not there will be a campaign.

2. If the answer is Yes, we will establish a “Presidential 2008 Election Committee”. We will decide whether or not this will be a separate committee or a subcommittee of CDLC. This committee will of course be open to all GRP members.

3. This diverse committee will do the following:

a. With our NC delegates, we will coordinate our plans with the National Green Party and with the Green Party candidates.

b. We will be knowledgeable about the appropriate campaign laws and timetable and handle relations with the Secretary of State’s office.

c. It will adopt a plan to adequately educate our members and the general public about the Green Party candidates who will be seeking the party’s nomination. On March 4, 2008 our members should be able to make an informed choice.

d. It will coordinate sending a diverse delegation to the Green Party’s national convention. Appropriate proportional representation based on the primary vote will determine the number of delegates for each candidate and volunteers who can represent different candidates will contact the candidates to be their designees for the national convention. It is predictable that if our party leaves the decision of who should be the delegates to the national candidates that this process will benefit our most privileged and active members. Our party needs to set up affirmative action rules in the selection of our delegation. To the extent that we don’t, we will lack diversity.

e. It will work with the GRP Finance Committee to do some fundraising in order to make sure that attendance at the Green Party’s national convention will not be an economic obstacle for any of our delegates.

f. After the March 4 Primary, it will plan a campaign in support of the Green ticket.

Below are the plans created by the CDLC in 2003 for the 2004 elections. We do not have plans for the 2008 election!
(This is the section (not included yet) that I’m asking Jamie and David to check its accuracy.
