2005 City Election Results

Green-Rainbow Party members won three city elections in 2005 and achieved a success rate of 100%.

Two incumbents returned to office

Chuck Turner, incumbent District 7 Boston City Councillor ran unopposed and won 6625 votes or 98.81% of all votes cast.

Incumbent Bruce Menin won a two year term School Committee position in Newburyport. He received 2699 votes to his opponent's 2529.

Green-Rainbow scores first win in Cambridge

Luc Schuster, running for Cambridge School Committee for the 1st time, became the first Green-Rainbow Party member to win a position in Cambridge city government. He won on the 5th round of ballot counting. He was the 5th of six candidates to be elected. He received 1827 1st place votes and placed 6th in such votes.

Luc, who is a teacher, native of Cambridge and had a well organized campaign team, is the first Green-Rainbow Party member to receive a candidate endorsement from the Cambridge Chronicle for a local election. In the two prior elections, a Green-Rainbow Party member ran for City Council.

Cambridge uses a single transferable voting (STV-PR) system that makes voting proportional. STV-PR operates in a manner similar to instant runoff voting in that voters rank their candidates on their ballots. Since there were eight candidates for six positions, two candidates (and write-ins) were eliminated through a series of rounds of ballot counting. The votes votes of the losing canidates were then allocated among the remaining candidates until six candidates received the required 2184 votes (1/7th of all votes cast).
